  • Description

In the Congolese capital of Brazzaville last Sunday (12 February), security forces showed newsmen the body of a former member of the Presidential Guard, who was alleged to have led the assassination team which killed Congolese President Marien Ngouabi last year (18 March 1977). The man, ex-Captain Barthelemy Kikadidi, had been shot in the back a short time before, when his hide-out was discovered by security forces.

SYNOPSIS: A cluster of newsmen were taken in Brazzaville to view the body of Barthelemy Kikadidi, who was one of more than a dozen people to die for their alleged part in the assassination. All the others, however, had been executed by firing squad.

The executions followed a trial earlier this month before a military court which condemned the absent Kikadidi to death.

The security forces also displayed Joseph Kifouani, a Brazzaville taxi driver, who, they said, helped Kikadidi to stay in hiding. They claimed Kifouani would soon name the dead man's other accomplices.
