  • Description

Place Polaert, Brussels, July 16, was the scene of another big demonstration against the Belgian Government's handling of Congo independence and calling for the continued presence of Belgian troops in the Congo to safeguard Belgians who have not yet left the country.

From Place Polaert the demonstrators marched towards the Grand' Place, going via the Place du Sablon. The march took place without incidents, but once arrived in the Grand' Place, there was a speech from the leader of the group organising the protest. He said the Government was responsible for the present disastrous situation.

The demonstration was organised by Belgian "colonials" who have formed a group campaigning for the "defence of Belgians in the Congo".
