Background: A huge crowd turned out in the Singapore National Stadium to see Prime Minister, Lee Kwan Yew, lead the formal celebration marking the 11th Anniversary of Singapore Independence. The Prime Minister was accompanied by other top ranking Government Ministers.
Singapore President, Dr. Benjamin Henry Sheares, reviewed the presidential guard of honour before the Independence parade began.
The parade was led by a military band and was followed by the comparative small but well equipped Singapore Defence forces, including a large contingent of police.
President Shears and Prime Minister Lee watched the parade from the official rostrum.
The parade also included a fly past by the Singapore airforce.
President Shears said the past eleven years had seen Singapore rise to one of the most prosperous nations in South-East Asia and he urged all the people of Singapore "to work together to ensure further progress".
