East German Gustav Schur won the 1,280 mile Berlin-Prague-Warsaw Peace Cycle race, may 15. The USSR team was the overall winner, with East Germany second and great Britain third.
As the riders raced into Warsaw stadium Moiceanu of Rumania was leading, close behind him was Italian Tonucci. Overhead an helicopter hovered and the vast stadium crowd set off fireworks.
Moiceanu won the last stage, from Lodz, just over 80 miles, but Schur was the overall winner.
As the race neared its final stages, leaflets, allegedly of Czech origin, were found at Gottvaldov, Czechoslovakia, indicating that the official Czech federation supported the use of fatigue inhibiting drugs. Drugs or no drugs, it was a gruelling race.
