    THIRTY-NINE CYCLISTS FROM SIX COUNTRIES TOOK THE STARTER'S FLAG IN THE SENEGALESE CAPITAL, DAKAR, ON THURSDAY (MARCH 26TH) FOR THE SEVEN-HUNDRED-MILE (APPROX. 1,107 KMS) "TOUR OF SENEGAL".

    IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THE RACE-NOW AN ANNUAL FIXTURE-HAD ATTRACTED OUTSIDE ENTRIES, WITH COMPETITORS COMING FROM ALGERIA, CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE, UPPER VOLTA, MALI, AND IVORY COAST. SEVERAL LOCAL CHAMPIONS WERE ALSO COMPETING FOR THE TROPHY AND PRIZE MONEY THAT GOES WITH WINNING ONE-OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS OF THE SENEGALESE SPORTING CALENDAR.

    WITH TROPHIES AWAITING THOSE FIRST ACROSS THE LINE AT EACH CHECK-POINT, THE CYCLISTS MAINTAINED A GRUELLING PACE AS THEY HEADED SOUTH FROM THE CAPITAL AND ALONG THE COAST TO M'BOUR.

    AFTER LEADING MOST OF THE WAY, ALGERIAN CHAMPION CHIBANE BELKACEM, CROSSED THE FINISHING LINE AHEAD OF FELLOW-COMPETITOR HAMZA MADJID.

    BALKACEM TOOK ONLY ONE-HOUR AND 45 MINUTES TO COMPLETE THE 50-MILE (83 KMS) SECTION. BEFORE CONTINUING ON THE NEXT LEG, THE WINNERS RECEIVED TROPHIES FROM THE RACE ORGANISERS, THE SENEGALESE FEDERATION OF CYCLISTS.
