    The West Indies scored a resounding victory against Australia in the Kerry Pecker World Series World match at the VFL Park in Melbourne on Tuesday (24 January). The match ended sensationally with West Indian Wayne Daniel hitting the winning six off the second to last ball of the evening. It gave the West Indies 214 runs for nine against the Australian's 212 for nine.

    SYNOPSIS: A record crowd for a World Series match of over 24,000 people packed the park for the match, which was played under floodlights. They were treated to some exciting cricket.

    Australian leg-spinner Ray Bright's eight-over spell planted the hope of a home victory in everybody's minds. He claimed four wickets. The first to fall was Jim Allan, who was bowled by Bright for 58. The crowd went wild.

    Then there was a sensation. Collis King was out from Bright's very next ball. Although there was some dispute, things looked set for an Australian victory. Bright went on to take Bernard Julien for 30 and Andy Roberts for three. But the two big West Indian pacemen Wayne Daniel and Joel Garner had other ideas. Garner took 16 runs off one over from Greg Chappell.

    Wayne Daniel was the man who saved the West Indies. With two balls to go, they needed another five runs to win. He hit a winning six from West Australian paceman Mick Malone. It was the second to last ball of the match. The West Indian players were elated and Daniel run from the ground amid thousands of children who had invaded the pitch. It was a sensational end to an exciting match.
