  • Description

Amos Mwasoni, of Lusaka City Athletic Club, captured the only major Zambian long distance running title which had so far eluded him when on Saturday he came home first in the National cross-country championships at Luanshya's Kafubu Stadium.

Mwasoni, a Tanganyikan, recently became a naturalised Zambian. He was the most strongly favoured of the 79 starters because of his recent powerful performances in the Midlands v. Copperbelt cross-country races.

After Saturday's win about the only field left for Mwasoni to conquer will be the marathon, which so far he has not tackled.

The 7 1/2 mile (12,000 metres) race takes the runners, for the most part, through thick bush surrounding Luanshya. It was started by the Mayor, Councillor Joseph Mukuka, who also presented the prizes after the finish.

Track events, which it was hoped to stage at the same time as the race, had to be cancelled as repairs to the Kafubu track had not been completed.
