Background: Boxing ... and South Korea's Kim Sang Hyun retained his World Boxing Council (WBC) junior welterweight title with an eleventh round knockout over Japan's Masahiro Yokai on Thursday (4 October).

SYNOPSIS: Kim, in the left hand corner, wearing the all white shoes, was making the second defence of his title in Tokyo's Korakuen boxing hall. The 24 year-old champion took command from the opening bell ... scoring continuously with fast left straights to Yokai's face.

Kim had taken the title from Thailand's Saensak Maungsurin last December with a thirteenth round knockout in Seoul. For the challenger Yokai, ranked nine in the WBC's listings, it was his first attempt at the title.

Through the first five rounds Kim, a southpaw, made good use of his longer reach, keeping Yokai contained, and controlling most of the exchanges.

Yokai's best spell came during the fifth round, hitting Kim with combination punches to the head and body. It was the only round the judges awarded to the challenger.

Two minutes and ten seconds into the eleventh round Yokai was put to the canvas by Kim. It was the first and only knockdown of the fight. For the champion, Kim, it was his nineteenth knockout in 34 fights. His next defence will be against Saoul Mamby, of the United States, in November.
