  • Description

The third African Games closed in Algeria last week with Tunisia as winner on points, followed by Nigeria, and the host country, Algeria, third. During the two weeks of the Games, many African records have been broken.

SYNOPSIS: The games have brought together African nations with widely different political affiliations, but for two weeks, the continent forgot its differences. The only incident which marred this record was the withdrawal of the Egyptian team, after football-pitch violence between Egyptian and Libyan teams.

The games were closed by Abraham Ordia, the Nigerian President of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa, who called upon the youth of Africa to assemble again in the city to be chosen for the fourth games -- as yet no country has offered to stage them. Expense is a major problem. Both previous host countries, the Congo and Nigeria, suffered considerable losses, and the Algerians invested heavily. Even though the venue has not been decided, the next games are scheduled for 1982.

With the exception of Nigeria, who announced last Wednesday (26 July) that they would boycott the Commonwealth Games, the rest of the Commonwealth teams from Africa boarded flights to Edmonton straight after the closing ceremony. The Commonwealth Games which will be opened by Queen Elizabeth of Britain, start on Tuesday (1 August).
