Background: President Salvador Allende of Chile on Thursday (5 July) appointed his new cabinet after lifting the state of emergency declared following last week's abortive Army coup. The new socialist and communist coalition cabinet faces a stiff task repairing a battered economy and restoring confidence after the coup attempt.
Seven new ministers have been brought into the cabinet by President Allende -- and its the seventh reshuffle since the Marxist leader took power.
Looking tired after working for three days to replace the cabinet, the President remarked that his government had a "hard task" ahead of it. He stressed that the principal aim would be to guarantee law and order, while taking emergency action to halt soaring inflation.
SYNOPSIS: Dr. Salvador Allende, Chile's Marxist President, on Thursday completed his seventh cabinet reshuffle since coming to power. Following the attempted army coup and state of emergency of the previous week, the existing cabinet resigned on bloc to make it easier for the President to announce sweeping changes. And in fact he appointed seven new ministers and warned them of a hard task ahead -- upholding law and order, while taking emergency action to halt soaring inflation.
The Defence Minister is Senor Clodormiro Almedia. President Allende tried to persuade the military to join the government. But they refused.
Senor Jorge Godoy is Minister of Labour in the new Cabinet.
The vital Mining Ministry goes to Senor Pedro Felipe Ramirez, aged thirty-two, whose first priority is to end a crippling strike by copper miners.
