  • Description

Khmer government forces, pushing north along Highway Six, have recaptured the strategic crossroads town of Barai, 56 miles north of Phnompenh, which had been in Communist hands for more than a year.

Apart from sabotaging the road, the Communists offered little resistance. An OV-10 plane was called in to strike at suspected Communist positions just south of Barai, while a mortar platoon let loose at another suspected position in a rubber plantation.

The government troops then moved into Barai where little damage was to be found. The Communists who once occupied the town had melted into the countryside.

Despite the arrival of government forces, many people fled south for fear of a major battle further north along Highway Six towards Kompong Thom where Communist infiltration and supply routes cross the road.

A Khmer High Command spokesman said the retreating Communists had rounded up and taken off as many as 3,000 villagers.

The 15,000-man government task force is expected to continue its push north towards Kompong Thom which has been encircled for more than a year now.
