Background: A COMMUNITY OF NEARLY 1400 PEOPLE ARE LEADING AN UNUSUAL LIFE ON REMOTE ASCENSION ISLAND - 38 SQUARE MILES OF VOLCANIC ROCK IN THE SOUTH ATLANTIC. MOST OF THEM ARE PERSONNEL, AND THEIR FAMILIES, WHO ARE ATTACHED TO THE BRITISH CABLE AND WIRELESS COMPANY, TO AN AMERICAN SPACE TRACKING STATION OR TO A U.S. AIR BASE. ABOUT 400 WORKERS COME FROM ST HELENA, 760 MILES AWAY.

THEIR NEEDS ARE CATERED FOR BY A FLOURISHING FARM ON GREEN MOUNTAIN AND A SCHOOL AND WELL-SUPPLIED SHOP IN GEORGETOWN -- ALL MANAGED BY CABLE AND WIRELESS LIMITED. A CHURCH WAS BUILT IN 1843 FOR BRITISH SAILORS AND MARINES, ASCENSION ISLAND'S FIRST INHABITANTS. THEY ARRIVED THERE IN 1815 TO GARRISON THE ISLAND AT THE TIME NAPOLEON WAS HELD CAPTIVE ON ST. HELENA.

THE ISLAND'S MALE POPULATION ENJOY THEIR LEISURE AT THE VOLCANO CLUB OR PLAY FOOTBALL, CRICKET AND GOLF, OFTEN ON GROUNDS OF SAND AND VOLCANIC ASH.

ASCENSION HAS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT PART IN WORLD COMMUNICATIONS SINCE 1899 WHEN CABLES WERE FIRST LAID FROM ST HELENA. IN 1939, CABLE AND WIRELESS BEGAN OPERATING A WIRELESS RELAY STATION THERE. SINCE THEN THEY HAVE LINKED THE NATIONS TOGETHER WITH SUBMARINE CABLE AND RADIO.

THE ISLAND IS DESTINED TO PLAY AN EVEN GREATER ROLE IN THE AMERICAN DRIVE TO PUT A MAN ON THE MOON BEFORE 1970. THE U.S. HAS INVESTED MORE THAN 100 MILLION DOLLARS IN THE SPACE TRACKING STATION AND AIR BASE.

CABLE AND WIRELESS ARE BUILDING A SATELLITE STATION THERE THAT WILL BE A KEY COMMUNICATIONS LINK IN THE APOLLO MOON PROJECT. WORK ON THE STATION, TO COST ABOUT GBP1 MILLION, IS GOING AHEAD ON A "CRASH PROGRAMME" BASIS TO ENABLE IT TO BE FULLY OPERATIONAL BY NEXT SEPTEMBER. IT WILL THEN COMMUNICATE THROUGH AN ORBITING SATELLITE - SIMILAR TO EARLY BIRD - WITH A SPACE FLIGHT CENTRE IN THE UNITED STATES.
