  • Description

Britain's Common Market negotiator, Geoffrey Rippon, Wednesday night began the last round of talks in the current series with the Common Market Ministers in Brussels. Some observers say that Wednesday's negotiations are the climax of this crucial round of talks on Britain's entry. Shortly before Mr. Rippon arrived for the meeting, the six member countries agreed on a compromise proposal to put to Britain on the question of transition to Common Market agricultural prices. The proposal would allow Britain to adjust to the higher Market farm prices in six stages during a five year period. British, French, and West German negotiators all expressed hopes of progress soon, although the Wednesday meeting was expected to extend late into the night.

For most of the day on Wednesday, the British negotiator was waiting, while the Common Market Ministers were meeting. He chose to spend part of the time in a British pub, the Queen Victoria.
