The agricultural tracts of the Central Plains of America have been highly productive this year. The winter wheat yield has been the greatest on record. Two big problems have faced the farmers in this respect, lack of storage and the danger of fire.
On Tuesday, June 17th., it happened. Fires broke out in the Enid area of Oklahoma. Fire tenders rushed from one conflagration to another, all day long. The searing heat from the sun has dried the corn and the ground, turning the fields into a state of inflammability.
Cars hurtling along Highway 81 were forced to slow down at points, around Enid, where the fires had spread to the roadside.
Other parts of the wheat belt, that stretches from Texas up to the wheatland of Canada, have suffered losses from fire, and it will be some few days before the danger is passed.
The excessive harvest has caused an increased demand for labour, which isn't forthcoming. As a consequence much of the wheat will stand in the fields long after the customary harvesting period.
