    STUDENT DEMONSTRATORS IN SUPPORT OF THE PHILIPPINES CLAIM TO THE MALAYSIAN STATE OF SABAH BECAME VIOLENT LAST FRIDAY NIGHT (SEPTEMBER 27) WHEN NEARLY 1,000 STUDENTS STONED THE GUARDHOUSE OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY IN MANILA. EARLIER THEY HAD BROKEN INTO THE GROUNDS OF THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR'S RESIDENCE, SETTING FIRE TO A STOREHOUSE AND SMASHING CAR WINDOWS AND LAMPS.

    THE STUDENTS WERE DEMONSTRATING AGAINST BRITISH AND AMERICAN STANDS IN THE PHILIPPINES DISPUTE WITH MALAYSIA OVER SABAH - CLAIMED BY THE PHILIPPINES.

    BRITISH AMBASSADOR JOHN MANSFIELD ADDIS RETURNED HOME TO FIND HIS GARDEN A CHAMBLES, WITH PLACARDS, BROKEN PLANT POTS AND SMASHED LAMPS LITTERING THE VERANDAH. AFTER BREAKING THROUGH THE WOODEN GATES OF THE RESIDENCE, THE STUDENTS BURNED PICTURES OF MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN AND SET FIRE TO THE STOREHOUSE BEFORE BEING CHASED OUT BY POLICE.

    THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF CASUALTIES AT THE AMERICAN EMBASSY, WHERE THE DEMONSTRATORS THREW STONES AT THE GUARDHOUSE, SHATTERING WINDOWS AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE COMPOUND.
