  • Description

An East German delegation from Karl Marx-Stadt (formerly Chemnitz) was escorted from Dartmund, West Germany, to the border, by West German police, Mar 10.

Eight East Germans, including Karl Marx-Stadt mayor Scheller, wanted to precede the Summit Conference by "all-German" talks with Dusseldorf's mayor Becker, but he declined their offer.

But the East Germans, including one woman - Frau Inge Mehner, with satisfactory transit papers, crossed into West Germany and reached Dusseldorf. Local police took them to the "Roemischer Kaiser", Dortmund's best hotel, Mar 9, and escorted them back to the border next day.

West German authorities said their continued presence might cause demonstrations by East German refugees or other anti-Communists, and they should leave in the interests of their own safety.
