  • Description

At a meeting of the National Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday (25 November) Egypt's Prime Minister, Dr. Mahmoud Fawzi made his first policy speech since taking office last month. In it he warned Israel that there was no chance of peace between the two countries while it insisted on occupying Egyptian soil.

The 70-year-old leader told the Assembly that while Egypt had accepted the United States peace proposals, and extended the ceasefire, there had been no response from Israel. Commenting on Israel's complaint about Egypt's Soviet-built missiles along the Suez Canal, Dr. Fawzi said that Israel would have nothing to fear from the missiles if it withdrew from Egyptian territory.

When the Egyptian leader told National Assembly members that Egyptian were prepared to fight "not for the love of war" but "to restore sacred rights" he was greeted with prolonged applause.
