  • Description

Factories, schools, bus services and restaurants throughout Peru ran reduced services on Thursday (27 May) as widespread strikes hit the country.

The strikers were demanding more pay and were protesting against government austerity measures which include a freeze on wage rises.

Leaders of the Metallurgical Workers Union said that most of their 10,000 members had walked out over the issue of re-instatement of dismissed colleagues and outstanding pay claims. They said their strike would be indefinite.

The Peruvian Teachers Union said on Thursday that its 120,000 members were staging a 24-hour strike for higher wages and labour guarantees.

Striking public transport employees gathered in Lima's main bus depot and staged a meeting to press their claims.

The meeting was carefully observed by police, but was peaceful and there were no incidents.
