  • Description

After the killing on Sunday (9 August) of guerrilla hostage Mr Dan Mitrione, police and troops have been combing Montevideo for two other hostages, who are still missing and held to ransom.

The men still missing, Brazilian diplomat Aloysio Mares Dias Gomide and U.S. soil expert Claude Fly, were kidnapped by left-wing Tupamaros urban guerrillas last week. The Government has refused to meet ransom demands for the release of 150 political prisoners. This refusal led the Tupamaros to 'execute' Mr. Mitrione, and they have threatened similar action against the two other hostages.

Mr Mitrione, a U.S. adviser to the Uruguayan police, was found murdered by shooting, in an abandoned car. His body was flown back to his home town of Dayton, Ohio, on Tuesday (11 August). Crowds of newsmen and sight-seers looked on as his widow arrived back at her Montevideo home after identifying the body of her husband.

There were more crowds at the spot where the body was found, with reporters talking to people who could tell them something of what had happened. Photographers ??? still be taken of the stains of blood on the road.

Police have been searching cars, and houses in Montevideo's most affluent suburbs on the look-out for the hiding-place of the two remaining Tupamaro hostages, despite a guerrilla communique that the pair would be killed if police tried to free them.

The guerrillas said however (August 11) that the two men were alive and well. Police have received from the guerrillas letters from the captives, saying they were being well-treated.

United Nations Secretary-General U Thant on Monday (August 10) denounced the murder of Mr Mitrione as `despicable' and made an appeal for the release of the two remaining hostages.

Another appeal came from the 14 year-old daughter of Brazilian Comide, on behalf herself and her five brothers.
