    In Amman, the former Jordanian Mayor of Jerusalem, Mr. Rawi el-Khatib, has claimed that excavations being carried out by the Israeli Ministry of Religious Affairs in occupied Old Jerusalem could lead to the destruction of Arab houses and the eviction of 3,000 Arab people.

    He claimed that 300 homes, five mosques and cultural and historical buildings were threatened with destruction "at any moment", and he accused the Israelis of pursuing a plan to destroy Arab properties and erase Islamic existence in the Holy City.

    At the conference, pressman were handed copies of the report by the United Nations Special Committee which recommended that the United Nations should call on Israel to desist from all measures for the annexation of the occupied part of Jerusalem.

    The Israelis claim the houses in question were cracked before the excavation began. And they claim most of the people affected are illegal squatters dating from Jordanian times.
