SYNOPSIS: This is the sale ring at one of the most famous bloodstock horse sales in the world... Newmarket. The event known as Tattersall's Newmarket December Sales got under way on Monday under the eyes of buyers from all over the world.

These buyers from Japan are among the many with flapping cheque books and a ready eye for a good animal. One of the best prices on Monday was twelve-thousand-five-hundred pounds, paid by the Japanese Minami Kyushu syndicate.

It was lot one-hundred-and-twelve, a mare named Antheria by Mossborough out of Carezz. The mare, believed to be in foal, has never run a race.

Before the Newmarket December Sales end on Saturday, more than fifteen hundred horses will have been put up for auction. It's estimated that something like five million pounds Sterling will have changed hands. The highlight could be the sale of Ginevra, the winner of this year's Oaks. It's rare for the winner of a classic to be offered on the open market.
