  • Description

PRESIDENT NASSER OF THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, OPENING THE NON-ALIGNED NATIONS' SUMMIT CONFERENCE IN CAIRO, YESTERDAY (MONDAY), CALLED FOR AN END TO IMPERIALISM IN ALL ITS FORMS. HE SAID IMPERIALISM WAS AN EXPLOSIVE ELEMENT OF THE TIMES.

PRESIDENT NASSER SPOKE TO LEADERS AND REPRESENTATIVES OF 47 NATIONS IN CAIRO'S UNIVERSITY ASSEMBLY HALL.

HE TOLD THEM: "NON-ALIGNMENT IS NOT BARGAINING IN THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN THE TWO CAMPS, SEEKING TO GET AS MANY CONCESSIONS FROM EACH AS POSSIBLE. THIS IS NOT THE CASE .... NON-ALIGNMENT IS NOT A POLICY WHICH SEEKS TO ISOLATE ITSELF FROM WORLD PROBLEMS. WE HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO DISCUSSING THESE PROBLEMS AND HAVE PROPOSED SOLUTIONS..." HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT CHANCES IN THE INTERNATIONAL SITUATION DID NOT AFFECT NON-ALIGNMENT, WHICH IN THE FINAL ISSUE WAS A GROUPING FOR PEACE BASED ON JUSTICE.

OTHER POINTS FROM HIS SPEECH WERE A CALL FOR REVISION OF THE UNITED NATIONS CHARTER, THE ENTRY OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA TO UNITED NATIONS MEMBERSHIP, AND AN ATTACK ON PORTUGAL, BRITAIN AND SOUTH AFRICA FOR FOLLOWING "OPPRESSIVE POLICIES" IN AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST.
