  • Description

WRETCHED WEATHER CONDITIONS PLAGUED THE 88 DRIVERS WHO ROARED OUT OF NAIROBI YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AT THE START OF THE 14 EAST AFRICAN SAFARI. THEY HAD TO DRIVE THROUGH HEAVY RAINSTORMS AS THEY WOUND THROUGH THE 8,000 FEET (2,400 KILOMETRES) USAMBARA MOUNTAINS ON THE FIRST STAGE OF THE 3,000 MILES (4,800 KILOMETRES) RALLY.

LARGE CROWDS SAW THE CARS LEAVE NAIROBI AT THREE MINUTE INTERVALS. TORRENTIAL RAINFALLS ON THE ROUGH ROADS QUICKLY TOOK THEIR TOLL. ON THE ROUTE SOUTH TO DAR-ES-SALAAM IN TANZANIA 15 OF THE CARS HAD BEEN FORCED TO DROP OUT. AMONG THE CASUALTIES WAS MRS. PAT MOSS CARLSSON, OF BRITAIN, ONE OF THE MOST EXPERIENCED DRIVERS. SHE WAS FORCED TO RETIRE AT MOROGO BEFORE REACHING DAR-ES-SALAAM. COMPETITORS ARRIVING AT THE TANZANIAN CAPITAL SAID ROADS LEADING TO THE CHECK-POINT STADIUM WERE ANKLE-DEEP IN MUD.

RALLY HEADQUARTERS SAID THAT, AFTER THE FIRST STRETCH, BERT SHANKLAND, OF TANZANIA, HAD TAKEN THE LEAD IN HIS PEUGEOT 404, CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY ERIK CARLSSON IN SAAB.

THE RALLY IS THROUGH KENYA, UGANDA AND TANZANIA AND WILL FINISH IN NAIROBI NEXT MONDAY.
