  • Description

Monsoon rains, which have already caused the death of over 350 people, lashed New Delhi and parts of Northern India on Tuesday (5 August).

In the northern state of Bihar, and nearby Assam, 11 million people have been affected by the floods and an estimated 90,000 have been evacuated to safer areas.

The floods have also cut road and rail links in parts of the north-east, making round-the-clock relief operations more difficult.

The rains have destroyed crops worth thousands of pounds (sterling), and when the waters recede it's causing almost most as much damage again. The flow acts as a huge suction pump ripping out foundations, flattening walls and destroying fresh water wells, thus creating cholera and typhoid threats.

In New Delhi, the season's biggest rainfall overflowed storm water drains, flooded streets and caused widespread damage to homes.

Parked cars were swept away in the swirling flood waters and many office workers had to trudge through knee deep water in the city's business district.
