  • Description

A rare species of giraffe is to be saved form extinction following action taken by the Kenyan Government.

SYNOPSIS: More than twenty of these rare giraffes are to be given protection in the Lake Nakuru National Park, 200 miles (321km) north of Nairobi.

This species is known as the Rothschild Giraffe, and can be recognised by their five horns on their heads instead of the usual three found on other species. No more than 130 of these giraffes are said to exist. The captured giraffes, all less than three years old, were found on the savannah plains of western Kenya. The first ten of these giraffes were put into an enclosed area for several weeks to get acquainted with their new surroundings.

After a brief ceremony, Mr Mathews Ogutu, the Kenyan Minister for Tourism and Wildlife, cut a ribbon releasing the 10 giraffes into Lake Nakuru Park. Another 14 giraffes are expected in the park by mid-July. To prepare them for their new home, the giraffes were given a specially-controlled diet of antibiotics and glucose in water. The rare giraffes have been fighting a losing battle against increasing land cultivation.
