Background: VISNEWS filmed June 16 in Hongkong, scenes of utter devastation and frantic rescue efforts as torrential rains flooded the island for the fourth day ... bringing the death toll to 64 and rendering 12,000 people homeless.

Police, fire brigade, public works and rescue workers were quick to help victims trapped when huge tenement houses and office buildings collapsed.

But the rainstorms, worst in Hongkong's history, were so heavy and landslides so sudden that rescue work was severely hampered. Roads were blocked crops ruined..and hundreds of hillside squatters trapped and injured as their flimsy homes tumbled under the force of the floods.

Communications were affected .. and air and sea transport curtailed.

Finally after four days of deluge and nearly 30 in. of rain, the rains ceased -- and the sun returned.

But rescue teams were still digging for bodies ... and the enormous task of starting afresh faced the islanders, homeless and bereaved by the disaster..
As rehabilitation began in Hongkong, Peking Radio reported that South-east China was suffering its worst floods in ten years.
