  • Description

THE 18TH INTERNATIONAL CANNES FILM FESTIVAL GOT UNDER WAY YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AND FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS THE FRENCH RESORT CITY WILL BE PLAYING HOST TO FILM STARS, PRODUCERS AND CRITICS FROM 26 COUNTRIES - INCLUDING, FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

THIS YEAR'S JUDGES, INCLUDING OLIVIA DE HAVILAND, WILL CHOOSE FROM SOME 52 ENTRIES BEFORE AWARDING THEIR MAIN PRIZE - THE "GOLDEN PALM LEAF" FOR A FULL-LENGTH FILM. THE FIRST SCREENING THIS YEAR WAS A NON-COMPETING AMERICAN FILM, "IN HARM'S WAY", TELLING OF THE JAPANESE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOUR IN 1941.

JAPAN ITSELF IS SHOWING ANOTHER NON-COMPETITIVE FILM, "TOKYO OLYMPIADES," FEATURING THE LAST OLYMPIC GAMES. THE ORGANISERS SAY THAT THIS YEAR'S 17-DAY FESTIVAL WILL BE ON "A HIGH INTELLECTUAL LEVEL", WITH THE MAIN INTEREST IN THE ARTISTIC CONTENT OF THE FILMS RATHER THAN THE BEHAVIOR OF THE FILM STARS AT CANNES.

FOR THE FILM INDUSTRY, THE ANNUAL CANNES FESTIVAL IS COMPARABLE WITH AN INTERNATIONAL TRADES FAIR. AN AVERAGE OF 7,000 CINEMA EXPERTS MEET AT CANNES EACH SPRING FOR THE COLOURFUL GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED FESTIVAL, THE FIRST OF WHICH WAS HELD IN 1946.
