Background: MORE THAN 250 DISPLAYS WILL BE ON VIEW TO THE PUBLIC FROM TOMORROW (WEDNESDAY), WHEN THE 1969 INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW OPENS ITS DOORS AT THE EARLS COURT EXHIBITION HALL IN LONDON. BOATS AND BOATING EQUIPMENT FROM MANY COUNTRIES WILL BE EXHIBITED, AND HOLIDAY SPOTS FROM BRITAIN AND ABROAD WILL HAVE DISPLAYS.

INSIDE THE EXHIBITION HALL IS A LARGE POOL, IN WHICH 22 BOATS ARE MOORED FOR THE DURATION OF THE SHOW. DURING THE COURSE OF THE SHOW, DAILY DEMONSTRATIONS OF SINGING, CANOEING, LIFE SAVING AND ANGLING WILL BE GIVEN AT THE POOL.

THE SOVIET UNION IS REPRESENTED AT THE BOAT SHOW WITH THE VOLGA HYDROFOIL. BUILT TO TRAVEL ABOVE THE WATER ON STRUTS, THE VOLGA SEATS SIX TO EIGHT PEOPLE AND CAN REACH A SPEED OF ABOUT 38 MILES AN HOUR (61 KM/P/H).

A PEDAL-OPERATED BOAT, THE TOOCAN, IS ON DISPLAY. IT IS DESIGNED FOR TRAVEL ALONG INLAND WATERWAYS. TWO PEOPLE SIT FACING EACH OTHER IN THE TOOCAN AND THE ACTION OF THE PEDALS TURNS A PROPELLOR. THE BOAT HAS BUILT-IN FOAM BUOYANCY AND FLARED CROSS-SECTIONS TO THE HULL TO MAKE IT STABLE.

A DANISH-BUILT SHIPS RADIO, THE SAILOR, IS WATER-TIGHT AND CAN FUNCTION UNDER A HEAVY SPRAY.

A POLICE LAUNCH FROM MALAWI, LOANED BY THE PRESIDENT, DR. BANDA, IS ALSO ON DISPLAY.

A NUMBER OF RANA BOATS, MANUFACTURED IN NORWAY, WERE DEMONSTRATED TODAY (TUESDAY). THE RANA BOATS ARE OF TWO TYPES, WOOD AND GLASS FIBRE.

THE 1969 INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW, SPONSORED BY A LONDON NEWSPAPER, WILL CONTINUE UNTIL JANUARY 11.
