  • Description

Thousands of sorrowing mourners lined the funeral route as the body of 19-year-old Daniel O'Hagan was carried through the strife-torn streets of Belfast yesterday.

O'Hagan was shot last Thursday night by a member of the King's Own Scottish Borderers regiment after allegedly having been told three times to put down a petrol bomb he was holding. He died early on Friday.

The shooting happened during one of the now-familiar confrontations between British troops and angry crowds in Belfast.

Yesterday, as his body was carried out of Unity Flats---- one of the main focal points for much of the fighting in Northern Ireland during the past 18 moths--- a lone piper led the funeral procession. From an upstairs window in the flats O'Hagan's mother watched the procession set off.

After the funeral fighting broke out between Catholic mourners and Protestants outside Unity Flats. Troops moved quickly in to disperse the milling crowd and separate them with barbed wire barricades.
