  • Description

TEMPORARY REPAIRS WERE CARRIED OUT YESTERDAY ON THE GHOR CANAL IN JORDAN, ON A SECTION BLOWN UP LAST MONTH BY ISRAELI TROOPS, UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYES OF SOLDIERS FROM THE NEARBY ISRAELI-HELD SECTOR. THIS FILM WAS SHOT FROM THE BORDER BETWEEN JORDAN AND THAT PART OF JORDAN HELD BY ISRAEL.

AN ISRAELI GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT SAID THAT THERE WOULD BE NO INTERFERENCE WITH REPAIR WORK ON THE CANAL, SOUTH-EAST OF LAKE KINNERET, AND YESTERDAY SOME 30 JORDANIAN WORKMEN MOVED IN WITH BULLDOZERS TO CLOSE THE BREACH MADE BY THE AUGUST 10 ATTACK.

US OFFICIALS HAD SUGGESTED THAT THE WORK BE ALLOWED TO GO AHEAD BEFORE TODAY'S SCHEDULED VISIT TO WASHINGTON BY ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER MRS GOLDA MEIR.

LATE YESTERDAY WATER STARTED FLOWING THROUGH THE IRRIGATION SYSTEM BUT FOUR HOURS LATER THERE WAS INTERMITTENT GUNFIRE FROM THE DIRECTION OF THE CANAL AND SAID TO COME FROM GUERRILLA POSITIONS.
