Background: Despite King Paul's attendance at a Requiem Mass for the repose of Pope Pius's soul at the Athens Catholic Cathedral of St. Dionyssios on October 18, leaders of the Greek Orthodox Church refrained from attending. The current coldness between the Vatican and Athens was thought to be responsible for this.
The Prime Minister of Greece was represented by Cabinet Minister and acting Foreign Minister, Mr. Constantine Tsatsos. The British Ambassador to Athens, Sir Roger Allen, the Chief of the Greek National Defence Staff, General Dovas, and Government Ministers also attended the Mass.
