Background: On Good Friday, Christians around the world held ceremonies to mark the crucifixion of Christ. In the Philippines, one man attracted a crowd of several thousand when he re-enacted the crucifixion step by step, including being nailed to the cross.
SYNOPSIS: 35-year-old Juanito Piring has reportedly gone through the crucifixion ceremony fourteen times before. In the village of Barrio San Pedro, about 40 miles (65 kilometres) south of Manila, the re-enactment has become an annual highlight of the Good Friday ceremonies. It attracts thousands of Christians, both local Filipinos and tourists who come to see Juanito following the crucifixion sequence. The whole re-enactment is authentic, and each step is carried out according to the Bible's telling of Christ's ordeal. Real nails are driven through his hands to fix him to the wooden cross.
The 35-year-old Filipino says he goes through with the ordeal to make up for his sins, and he will continue to put himself through the crucifixion process every year. He is left up on the cross for about five minutes before being brought down and released. Newsmen who witnessed the re-enactment said Juanito appeared relaxed when he came off the cross, and stressed that he would be back to do it again next year.
