Background: The African Peanut Council has urged greater national government efforts to promote research in growing and commercialising peanuts. An announcement to this effect climaxed the 14th Session of the Council which ended week-long discussions in Niamey on Tuesday (8 December).

The Council also put forward several recommendations. These included proposals to establish a peanut research prize, and a giant drive to popularise peanuts.

The newly-elected President of the African Peanut council, M. Modibo Diallo, told delegates from Nigeria, Senegal, Congo-Kinshasa, the Sudan, and Niger that the Council had not managed to achieve important results during the past six years because 'powerful forces controlled the world peanut market".

Council discussions were mainly centred around budgetary considerations, but there was also an exchange of ideas which could well help to overcome technical problems relating to the improvement of peanut seed and fertilisers.

The Council will meet again in Addis Ababa in April.
