  • Description

This is the first film of the Atlas Intercontinental Ballistic Missile factory, San Diego, California USA. - as Visnews followed the manufacture of the rockets right through to the final testing stage at Cape Canaveral.

The Convair (Astronautics) Division of the General Dynamics Corporation holds the contract. The 40-million dollar plant includes two six-storey administration and engineering laboratory buildings and 580,000 square feet of factory space. In the 840-feet long factory a 55-feet high ceiling permits handling of the completed missiles by overhead crane.

The nearly completed stainless steel Atlas 75-feet long and 10-feet in diameter - rests in elevated harness in the final assembly area. Beneath each missile are the equipment buns and electronic equipment needed to check each missile sub-sections.

Completed Atlas missiles on special handling trailers are towed to distant test bases. These trailers, with front and rear steering, also erect the missiles in gantry towers at launching.

Shrpuded to protest sensitive mechanisms from roadside dust, the missiles start their overland journey to Cape Canaveral two and a half thousand miles away.

At the Cape launching pads test vehicles are loaded for trips out into the Atlantic. As firing time approaches more than thirty thousand gallons of liquid oxygen and R.P. 4- a type of rocket fuel - are pumped into the missile's tank. Convair engineer Bob Shotwell - name most appropriate ..- waits in the bunker for the count-down. Three.. two.. one.. ZERO.. - he pushes the firing button and away she goes, with an initial thrust of 360,000 lbs.

During its journey across the ocean the Atlas will reach 16,000 mph.
