    ROYAL AIR FORCE CORPORAL DOUGLAS DAY, 26, WHO WAS SHOT IN THE STOMACH BY EAST GERMAN BORDER GUARDS NINE DAYS EARLIER, WAS DRIVEN ACROSS THE BORDER INTO WEST BERLIN, MAR 19, ON THE WAY TO A BRITISH MILITARY HOSPITAL AT SPANDAU.

    THE AMBULANCE WAS ESCORTED BY A BRITISH MILITARY MISSION CAR. AN ARMY SPOKESMAN SAID AFTERWARDS THE CORPORAL STOOD THE TRIP WELL, AND ALTHOUGH HIS CONDITION WAS STILL SERIOUS HE WAS COMFORTABLE.

    CORPORAL DAY WAS WOUNDED WHEN THE OFFICIAL CAR HE WAS DRIVING FROM BERLIN TO POTSDAM ON MARCH 10 WAS SPRAYED WITH MACHINEGUN FIRE. HE WAS OPERATED ON AT A POTSDAM HOSPITAL AND KEPT THERE UNTIL WELL ENOUGH TO BE MOVED. A BRITISH COLONEL IN THE CAR AT THE TINE OF THE SHOOTING ESCAPED UNINJURED AND WAS ALLOWED TO RETURN TO WEST BERLIN.
