  • Description

General Francisco Franco, dictator of Spain for nearly 40 years, died early on Thursday (20 November) after a sickbed ordeal lasting more than a month.

He died before daybreak after his doctors had given up hope of saving his life. The 82-year old General survived three major stomach operations in the 11 days before his death. They followed a combination of stomach haemorrhages, heart attacks, kidney failure, Parkinson's disease, acute gastric ulcers and bronchial pneumonia.

His death left Spain facing an uncertain political future. His designated successor, Prince Juan Carlos De Borbon, 37, will be proclaimed king on Saturday (22 November).

Since General Franco fell ill after his first heart attack on October 21, several opposition politicians have been arrested.

Reaction to his death throughout Europe and the world was guarded. Most world leaders referred to the death of the Spanish leader as an end of an era, expressing the hope it would lead to a peaceful transition to a more democratic Spain.

The government decreed 30 days of mourning, closed schools for a week and shut all Spanish stock exchanges for the rest of the week.

General Franco's body was to lie in State in the Royal Palace in Madrid until Sunday morning, when it will be buried in basilica of Valley of the Fallen -- the memorial to those who died in the 1936-39 civil war which brought him to power.
