  • Description

A cargo of dried cod was taken aboard by transport planes of the US Air Force, at Bergen, Jan 27, to be flown to Luluabourg, capital of the Congo's Kasai Province which has 300,000 starving refugees waiting fro relief.

Famine relief for South Kasai is organised by the United Nations Food and Agriculture branch through the International Red Cross. Norway is contributing dried fish as one of her main exports.

At Bergen, Norway's cod-fishing centre, boats put in with loads of fish, which is dried and compressed into large square packages for space-saving transport. First relief flights were carried out by the Norwegian Air Force.

On Jan 7, four C-330 Hercules aircraft of the US Air Force left Bergen with total load of 56 tons of dried cod, expected to reach Luluabourg on Jan 29. Three more plane loads of fish were to leave on Jan 28. Other consignments will follow by sea. In all, the Norwegian Red Cross is hoping to send some 1,000 tons of fish to the Congo.
