The Andover entered service with the R.A.F. in 1967. It is a short-range military freighter, powered by two Rolls-Royce Dart turboprop engines. It has rear loading doors, and can carry either 44 troops, 30 parachutists, 18 stretcher cases, or a maximum of 12,000 lbs. of freight. The aircraft has a very good short take-off and landing performance, and it can operate from rough semi-prepared airstrips of 500 yards. This performance enables it to operate in forward operational areas, and the aircraft is already in service in the Middle East and Far East.
Another version of this aircraft is also in service with the R.A.F. as a VIP and communications aircraft, and a specially furnished version is in use with the Queen's Flight.
