  • Description

The Kenya general election....when the polls closed in the Nairobi Central constituency, Feb 20, it was estimated that about 74 per cent of the electorate had cast their votes. Polling in the country's 43 other constituencies is being spread over the rest of the week and the results are expected to be announced on March 1.

Nairobi Central is an Asian non-Muslim reserved constituency with Asians making up more than four-fifths of the electorate. Voting went quietly after an election campaign bedevilled by personal feuds and demands for the release of convicted Mau Mau leader, Jomo Kenyatta.

The country will elect 53 members on a common roll. Of these, 33 will come from open constituencies, in which there are only two non-Africans standing. The remainder are reserved constituencies; 10 European, five Asian non-Muslim, three Asian Muslim and two Arab, in which the candidates had to win 25 per cent of the votes from their own group at primary elections before they could go forward to election on the common roll.

The 53 elected members - sitting as an electoral college - will elect 12 more national members, taken from all races.
