  • Description

IN KAMPALA, UGANDA, POLICE USED TEAR GAS TO DISPERSE DEMONSTRATORS PULLING DOWN THE FLAG FROM THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY YESTERDAY (TUESDAY).

THE DEMONSTRATION FOLLOWED CHARGES BY THE UGANDAN GOVERNMENT THAT TWO UGANDAN VILLAGES ON THE BORDER WITH THE CONGO WERE BOMBED AT THE WEEKEND BY CONGOLESE PLANES PROVIDED BY THE UNITED STATES.

DR. MILTON OBOTE, THE PRIME MINISTER SAID EARLIER HE WAS NOT PREPARED TO ACCEPT WASHINGTON'S PLEA THAT IT HAD NO CONTROL OVER U.S. PLANES USED BY THE LEOPOLDVILLE GOVERNMENT. AFTER HIS ANNOUNCEMENT, DR. OBOTE SAID HE HIMSELF WOULD LEAD THE PROTEST MARCH.

THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SUSPENDED ITS SESSION SO THAT MEMBERS COULD TAKE PART IN THE PROTEST. AND THE LABOUR MINISTER ISSUED A CALL TO EMPLOYERS TO ALLOW THEIR WORKERS TO TAKE PART.

THOUGH THE SITUATION LOOKED ALARMING AS THE TEAR GAS BOMBS FELL, THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES AND NO ONE WAS ARRESTED.

(THE BORDER WITH THE CONGO WAS CLOSED AFTER THE ATTACK ON THE UGANDAN VILLAGES. A UGANDAN ANNOUNCEMENT SAID TODAY UGANDAN AND CONGOLESE TROOPS HAD EXCHANGED FIRE, SOUTH OF LAKE ALBERT. IN THE SOUTHWEST, CONGOLESE TROOPS TRIED TO ENTER A UGANDAN CUSTOMS POST BUT WERE DRIVEN OFF, THE ANNOUNCEMENT SAID. UGANDA ALSO CLOSED ITS BORDER WITH THE REPUBLIC OF RWANDA TODAY.)
