  • Description

NEW MOBILE BRIDGE-BUILDING EQUIPMENT FOR THE FRENCH ARMY WAS DEMONSTRATED AT SATORY CAMP NEAR VERSAILLES YESTERDAY (14 NOVEMBER).

THE TEMPORARY BRIDGE IS JACK-KNIFED IN TWO SECTIONS TO A TANK MAKING THE TOTAL WEIGHT 38-TONS. AS LONG AS THE SOIL IS FIRM ENOUGH TO TAKE THIS, THE BRIDGE CAN BE PUT IN PLACE COMPLETELY AUTOMATICALLY. A THREE-MAN TEAM OPERATES THE TANK WHICH OPENS THE 22-METRES LONG BRIDGE STRUCTURE OVER A RIVER OR CHASM IN LESS THAN 10-MINUTES. THE TANK CAN THEN DRIVE OVER THE BRIDGE AND RE-ATTACH THE STRUCTURE TO ITSELF AT THE OTHER SIDE, OR IT CAN BE ATTACHED TO ANOTHER TANK FOLLOWING.

IN NORMAL CONDITIONS, THE BRIDGE STRUCTURE WILL CARRY UP TO 50-TONS BUT SHOULD BE ABLE TO TAKE EVEN MORE.

THE EQUIPMENT IS A PROTOTYPE AMX.30 PRODUCED BY CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THE TECHNICAL BUREAU OF LAND ARMAMENTS FROM THE CONSTRUCTION OFFICE AT ISSY-LES-MOULINEAUX AND THE BUREAU OF TECHNICAL RESEARCH AT ANGERS.
