• Short Summary

THE BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR. GORDON WALKER, TOLD THE SIX COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES THIS MORNING?

  • Description

THE BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR. GORDON WALKER, TOLD THE SIX COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES THIS MORNING (MONDAY) THAT BRITAIN WANTED TO TAKE PART FROM THE BEGINNING IN ANY TALKS ON EUROPEAN POLITICAL UNITY. HE WAS SPEAKING IN BONN TO THE WESTERN EUROPEAN UNION MEETING AT THE END OF HIS GERMAN VISIT.

MR. GORDON WALKER SAID HE WAS DISAPPOINTED AT THE LACK OF CO-OPERATION BETWEEN MINISTERS OF THE SIX AND BRITAIN IN THE EUROPEAN UNION FRAMEWORK SINCE 1963. IT WAS NOT ONLY A QUESTION OF CLARIFYING BRITISH POLICY TOWARDS EUROPE BUT ALSO GIVING AN AIRING TO THE POLICY OF THE SIX TOWARDS BRITAIN.

(DR. GERHARD SCHROEDER, WEST GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER, TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE TONIGHT THAT HE HIMSELF HAD REPEATED HIS GOVERNMENT'S VIEW THAT PRELIMINARY DISCUSSIONS ON THE GERMAN UNITY PROPOSALS SHOULD BE CONFINED TO THE SIX. BUT THE DOOR SHOULD BE "LEFT OPEN FOR BRITISH ADMISSION."
(DR. SCHROEDER SAID THE BRITISH MINISTER HAD REAFFIRMED THE LABOUR GOVERNMENT'S DETERMINATION TO OBSERVE THE COMMITMENTS OF THE PREVIOUS BRITISH GOVERNMENT TO DEFEND WEST BERLIN AND NOT TO THE RECOGNISE EAST GERMANY.)
