  • Description

The Israeli Airline Boeing 707, damaged in an explosion after leaving Rome Wednesday night (16 August), was flown back to Lydda Airport in Tel Aviv without passengers on Thursday.

the blast was officially said to have been caused by a bomb planted in a record player, given to two British girls in Rome by two Arabs. It was in the luggage compartment. The cargo holds's floor was ripped by the blast, but El Al officials said the plane would be repaired by Thursday night.

None one was hurt in the explosion, which started a small fire in the aircraft's cargo hold. But, four girl passengers received cuts and bruises when they flung themselves down the escape chute after the aircraft returned to Rome and made an emergency landing.
