    After Thursday (July 23) night's speech by President Nasser in Cairo in which he announced conditional acceptance of the U.S.-proposed peace formula, government officials in Washington, D.C., have been expressing their views on hopes for a possible Mid-East settlement.

    Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright, the leader of the Senate Committee for Foreign Relations, said he was pleased by the apparent Arab response.

    In a brief statement on Friday, the Senator said it was now up to Israel to decide upon accepting the 90-day ceasefire, and he added that he did not think the Middle East situation could be solved by arms and warfare.
