Background: Black militant Angela Davis was charged in San Rafael on Wednesday (January 6) of murder, kidnapping and conspiracy. Miss Davis, 26, declared her innocence and said she was the victim of a political frame-up. The courtroom was heavily guarded and courtroom spectators were searched before being allowed to enter.
Miss Davis appeared with a co-defendant, Ruchelle Magee, who was wounded in the gun battle last August at Maric civic Centre Court House, which left a superior court judge and three of his kidnappers dead.
Miss Davis, a former philosophy instructor at the University of California in Los Angeles, is accused by the authorities of supplying the guns for the escape attempt.
Outside the court, several hundred of her supporters, shouting "Free Angela", staged a protest demonstration. Like her, they contend that she is a political prisoner on trial because she is both an avowed Marxist and black.
