  • Description

All preparations have now been completed for the April 11 opening of the trial of Adolf Eichmann. The Community Centre in Jerusalem has been entirely converted to stage what is expected to be one of the most dramatic post-war trials.

Eichmann has been moved into a heavily guarded cell-block nearer the court room, and strict security precautions have been taken to safeguard the man Israel accuses of being responsible for the death of up to six million Jews during Hitler's campaign to exterminate every Jew in Europe.

In the court Eichmann will be totally isolated in a bullet-proof glass enclosure. His only contact with the court will be through microphones and head phones. Seven days ago the enclosure was thoroughly searched, and since then a soldier armed with an automatic weapon maintains an unbroken 24-hour security guard inside. A guard will remain inside with Eichmann during the trial.

The courtroom will hold 750 people, and more than 500 seats have already been allocated to the members of the international corps of news correspondents covering the trial. The first two rows in the balcony are reserved for the Diplomatic Corps, members of the Israeli Government, and foreign observers.

Four booths on the right of the balcony will house the simultaneous translators. Closed circuit television will relay the scene to newsmen in the specially built press room, and their reports will be flashed around the world from a specially installed post office.
