  • Description

Lebanon President Suleiman Franjieh on Saturday (16 June), accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Amin Al-Hafez's Government.

Speaking to reporters after calling at the Presidential Palace, Dr. Hafez quoted President Franjieh as saying consultations on the formation of a new government would begin on Monday (18 June). The President asked Dr. Hafez and his ministers to continue running government affairs pending the installation of a new cabinet.

Dr. Hafez tended his Government's resignation on Thursday (14 June) following pressure by Moslem Sunni leaders that he should step down because their community was not adequately represented.

Dr. Hafez formed his Government on April 25th, succeeding that of Mr. Saeb Salam, who is now one of those tipped to succeed to the Premiership.

The Hafez government faced two major crisis in its short life. The first was the flare-up, at the beginning of May, between the Lebanese army and Palestinian commandos. During the fighting Dr. hafaz resigned, but withdrew his resignation when an understanding was reached with the commandos.

But the Government's handling of the crisis provoked the second issue -- effective Sunni participation in the running of the country. And it was over this issue that Dr. Hafaz was forced to resign.
