  • Description

AN ATHENS APPEAL COURT TODAY (TUESDAY) COMMUTED A DEATH SENTENCE ON A RELIGIOUS CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR TO FOUR AND A HALF YEARS IN JAIL. THE MAN, 22-YEARS-OLD CHRISTOS KAZANIS, A MEMBER OF THE JEHOVA'S WITNESS RELIGIOUS SECT, REFUSED TO TAKE POSSESSION OF A WEAPON WHEN HE WAS CALLED UP FOR ARMY SERVICE.

THIS IS THE SECOND PRISON SENTENCE KAZANIS HAS RECEIVED FOR CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION, AND HE FACES THE POSSIBILITY OF ANOTHER CALL UP WHEN HE LEAVES JAIL WITH ANOTHER TRAIL IF HE AGAIN REFUSES.

HE WAS SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS IN JAIL IN 1964. AFTER HIS RELEASE HE WAS AGAIN CALLED UP. HE AGAIN REFUSED TO TAKE UP ARMS AND A COURT SENTENCED HIM TO DEATH.

IN THE APPEAL COURT TODAY KAZANIS' LAWYER ASKED FOR A PRISON SENTENCE OF FIVE YEARS OR MORE - THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN ACCOMPANIED AUTOMATICALLY BY THE LOSS OF CIVIL RIGHTS AND THUS DISCHARGE FOR LIFE FROM THE ARMY.

KAZANIS SAID AFTER TODAY'S HEARING THAT HE WILL AGAIN PLEAD CONSCIENCE AND REFUSE TAKE UP ARMS IF HE IS FACED WITH A THIRD CALL-UP.
