  • Description

THE SEARCH FOR NATURAL GAS, WHICH HAS BEEN REWARDED WITH GREAT SUCCESS IN THE NETHERLANDS AND THE NORTH SEA, HAS SPREAD TO WEST BERLIN. DRILLING IS NOW IN PROGRESS IN THE GRUNEWALD FOREST NEAR THE BANKS OF THE RIVER HAVEL ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY.

A LOCAL DRILLING COMPANY, PREUSSAG, IS CONDUCTING THE DRILLING OPERATION, AND THE SCHEME IS A JOINT VENTURE BETWEEN THE CITY GOVERNMENT OF WEST BERLIN AND BRITISH PETROLEUM.

GEOLOGISTS HAVE PROTECTED THAT THE DRILLERS WILL STRIKE SUBSTANTIAL DEPOSITS OF NATURAL GAS AT A DEPTH OF ABOUT 12,000 FEET (4,000 METRES).

WHILE WEST BERLIN LOOKS FOR ITS OWN GAS, WEST GERMANY HAS BEEN DISCUSSING WITH MOSCOW A SOVIET PROPOSAL TO EXTEND THE PIPELINE WHICH AT PRESENT SUPPLIES SOVIET NATURAL GAS TO EAST GERMANY, TO CARRY THE GAS TO WEST GERMANY AS WELL.
