In his United Nations'Day speech, the Secretary-General of the U.N. Dr. Kurt Waldheim, said much remained to be done before the Organisation could live up to the hopes that had been placed in it.
But, he said, it was significant that the principle of international co-operation in problems that affected the world had won universal acceptance.
He said recent international events had proved that an organisation like the United Nations was indispensable.
Apart from playing a crucial role in situations such as those in the Middle East and Cyprus, the Organisation had provided a fourm for discussion on problems affecting the whole world.
Dr. Waldheim referred to discussions on vital problems like the international economic and monetary crisis, the need for increased food production, the rapid growth of the world population and the attempt to achieve international agreement on questions relating to the sea and its resources.
SYNOPSIS: Thursday -- twenty-fourth of October -- is universally celebrated as the Untied Nations' Day.
